Tool – Sober (1993)

Just making it in under the wire for Music Video Monday. Been swamped at work and out of town, but here we are with the oddest of the MVM’s so far. I have 5 favorite music video artists, artists who put out groundbreaking music video after groundbreaking music video. Bjork, Busta Rhymes, Radiohead, Beastie Boys, and Tool. Every other artist has had at least one video posted on Golden Bloggen except Tool. So I have to give props to maybe the sickest metal group of all time.

I’m not a big fan of metal and didn’t listen to much rock music when I was a kid, but Tool’s videos always got me. Tools deep, heavy guitar riffs fit perfectly with their dark and disturbing videos that are so creepy and unsettling . But they’re so damn good. Their animation always intrigued me. I was still 9 when “Sober” came out, and I felt like I was watching something I wasn’t supposed to be. The video is from 1993 and looks eerily similar to “A Nightmare Before Christmas” which came out 3 years after.
And how is a young boy going to pass up a video with ‘sex’ in the title.
Tool – Prison Sex (1993)
This video is so freaky. Most Tool videos are hard to watch and hard to stomach. It’s like watching a mixture of gory horror and hardcore porn, but in a bad, scary way.
Tool – Stinkfist
I will pay someone a hundred dollars if they could explain Tool’s music videos. Especially this 10 minute epic with a nice cameo from Tricky.
Tool – Parabola (2002)

This had to be Tool’s biggest song. I remember hearing this everywhere senior year of high school.  And of course it’s a great, incredibly creative video.

Tool – Schism (2001)

So bad news. I received this email today:

"Blogger has been notified, according to the terms of the Digital Millennium
Copyright Act (DMCA), that certain content in your blog infringes upon the
copyrights of others."

It was referring to the Detour Music Festival post. They deleted the ENTIRE POST. Not a song or two, the whole fucking thing. And they didn’t even tell me which song infringed the damn copyrights. But apparently there is a possibility I will be notified in a few weeks. Possibility?!

This is bullshit!

But whatever. I’ll post some more shit soon and hopefully I won’t infringe on any mysterious copyright laws.

Beastie Boys – Sabotage (1994)

I can obviously only do so many ‘Music Video Mondays’ before I talk about the legend that is Spike Jonze. One of the craziest Mofo’s to ever get behind a camera. His music videos are revolutionary, cool, and jaw-dropping. His body of work extends to ridiculous commercials for Nike and Gap as well as to very surreal films, Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, and hopefully his new film Where the Wild Things Are will one day actually come out. And oh yeah… he used to do Sofia Coppola.

But today I speak of his music videos. He’s made sick videos for artists like Bjork, Fatboy Slim, and daft Punk, but I just want to focus on his amazing Hip-Hop videos. No one gives Spike half the credit he deserves for pushing the envelope when it comes to the generic genre of Hip-Hop videos. I gathered all the Hip-Hop videos on his resume to bring to y’all.

This video is ridiculous. Filmed backwards way before that Coldplay video. Spike told the Pharcyde to learn how to rap the song backwards so that the lips would link up when played forward. It’s pretty F-ing close. Look out for the Beastie Boys cameo.

Pharcyde – Drop (1996)

Just a crazy video. This version of the video came out after the original Hip-Hop version and blew fans. Lil’ Kim is truly the highlight of this clip.

Puff Daddy & The Family – All About the Benjamins Rock Remix (1997)

Member of the Pharcyde makes a hilarious video. Check out the full documentary if you can.

Fat Lip – What’s Up Fat Lip? (2000)

Newest Hip-Hop video for Spike. I didn’t even know it was his. Surprise.

Ludacris – Get Back (2004)

Biggie had just recently died, but Bad Boy records wanted to put out videos from his album. Spike had a great idea. How about Biggie and other rappers played by kids?! It’s fucking brilliant and speaks for itself. See if you can name everyone.

Notorious B.I.G. ft. 112 – Sky’s the Limit (1997)

I forgot to post this video originally. Not only is it a Spike Jonze Hip-Hop video, but it’s also his most recent video. Slightly perverse, yet sexy, just how I like it.

Kanye West – Flashing Lights

Little Boots
is one of my favorite new artists to emerge this year. She reminds me of another new Slow Girl artist Lykke Li, but I prefer Little Boots’ dancier approach to the genre. I first fell in love with her after I heard Fake Blood’s remix of her song “Stuck on Repeat.” A finalist for best song title of the year.

Little Boots, real name Victoria Hesketh, got her name from the Latin translation of the word and popular X-rated movie Caligulia. She now resides in Los Angeles, and has recently put out her first EP, Arecibo. A relative newcomer to the game, she has already worked with members of Hot Chip and The Bird and the Bee.

I’m posting some of the songs from the EP here but I urge fans to go out and support artists by actually buying their music and seeing them live.

Little Boots – Stuck on Repeat

Little Boots – Stuck on Repeat (Fake Blood Remix)

Little Boots – Meddle

Little Boots – Meddle (Designer Drugs 80s Coke Jam Remix)

I’m also posting this mixtape of hers. That’s right she DJ’s too!

Little Boots – Computer Fairyland Mixtape

01. Be Beat Girls – For Same Man
02. Hercules & Love Affair – You Belong (Riton Rerub)
03. Purple Crush – Physical Attraction
04. Popular Type – Febbre del Discotheque
05. Black Ghosts – Repetition Kills You (Emperor Machine Dub)
06. Trans X – Living On Video
07. Leon Jean Marie – Bring It On (Little Boots Remix)

Thanks to Discodust for the heads up.

I’m headed to the Detour festival in Downtown L.A. tomorrow. I’ll be back next week with a large post about the festival. Have a good weekend!

Also….. I gotta talk about Chris Rock’s hilarious stand up that premiered on HBO last Saturday. Mofo is hilarious. He talked about Obama, sex with white women, and tons of other hilarious shit. Everything he said was on point and my man just looked happy to be on stage preaching. Good job sir.

Remember this hilarious gem from him about 10 years ago. Aww yeah you do.
