MVM – PAUL HUNTER

Notorious B.I.G. – Hypnotize (1997)

Paul Hunter is one of the most under appreciated music video directors ever. Along with Hype Williams he shaped people’s perceptions of what R&B and Hip-Hop music should look like. They both worked with a lot of the same artists, and they both had unique visions. Only difference is, Hunter never received the same HYPE as Williams. The way Scorsese and Coppola ruled the film world in the late 70’s, Hunter and Williams ruled the music video world in the late 90’s.

I love Kelis. I don’t post enough of her stuff. This video is from her debut album Kaleidoscope that she made when she was a teenager and is completely produced by the Neptunes. Nuff said.

Kelis – Get Along (2000)

Paul and Hype’s styles are so similar sometimes it seems that one of them is jocking the other. Hype used to do this glossy black & white style all the time back in theday. But I like Paul’s take on it. Also there are like 4 girls in this video that I went to Palisades high school with. P-House!

Snoop Dogg ft. Pharell – Drop It Like It’s Hot (2004)

Another great black & white video from Paul. The Knight Rider beat, with a crazy futuristic theme and ridiculously amazing song from Busta. What else you want?

Busta Rhymes – Turn It Up (Remix)/ Fire It Up (1998)

This song was made popular by its use in a Tommy Hilfiger commercial that Paul also directed. This shit got me immediately obsessed with Nikka. Girl’s got chops. Go see her live. Trust me!

Nikka Costa – Like a Feather (2001)

Back in the day black directors directed black videos and white directors directed white videos. Hype and Paul were two of the first to crossover and start directing rock videos. I posted Paul’s video for Marilyn Manson’s “Dope Show” last week and that is actually what inspired this post. I think this video looks amazing and the song is also really good. I think they shot this the week before Courtney Love lost her fucking mind.

Hole – Malibu (1998)

I always give Hype Williams props for finding the most beautiful girls (Leila Arcieri, K.D. Aubert), but there may not be a singer hotter than Tamia. And they’re has never been a video that showcased a singer looking sexier than Tamia does in this vid. Grant Hill (her husband) is one lucky mofo.
