OLD SCHOOL SUNDAYS – DEEE-LITE

Posted in MUSIC on April 25, 2010 by Keyvon

Recently I posted Bobby Brown’s Don’t Be Cruel on Old School Sunday, a CD I picked up at Goodwill. Today I am posting another hard to find banging ass CD I was lucky enough to pick up in the CD section at the Goodwill. It comes from real Old School throwbacks Deee-Lite. If the band name doesn’t sound familiar to you, their smash single “Groove is in the Heart” most definitely will. I don’t know if there’s ever been a bigger One-hit wonder of a dance band than these guys. This track is TWENTY YEARS OLD and still will get the dance floor packed. And I don’t know if there’s anyone out there who could name any other Deee-Lite songs. But apparently they released two albums after their 1990 debut World Clique. I’ll have to hunt those down now as well. And does it get any better than the Q-Tip guest drop in the middle of “Groove is in the Heart”? No!

*SIDE NOTE: WHAT THE FUCK??? GURU DIED???!!!! (TRIBUTE POSTS COMING SOON)

GORILLAZ @ COACHELLA

Closing out the Coachella Festival were Gorillaz. If you don’t know exactly what Gorillaz is, it is a music project headlined by Damon Albarn of Blur (and assisted by artist Jamie Hewlett) who uses a revolving door of musicians. The new album features Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Little Dragon, and more. Bobby and Little Dragon were on site to accompany the band live, as were members of the Pharcyde and De La Soul. It was a pretty dope performance, but I dont think the crowd was too familiar with the non singles of the band. The same way I felt about the Muse crowd. Jay-Z, Friday night’s headliner had everyone singing. But no crowd has ever been as big, or had more devoted fans than the crowd Weezer pulled in ’05.

*Daft Punk in ’06 was the best performance I’ve ever seen, but if I had to guess, I’d say their crowd was 75-80% the size of Weezer’s

BACK FROM COACHELLA!

I’m back from my favorite place on the planet. I was in Indio, CA for the last 4 days at the Coachella Valley Music Festival. This shit was bananas I tell you. First off the fest sold out the week before which left a lot of people in a tizzy to scrape up a quick ticket, so the festival itself was just a mad house. Secondly, the line-up was ridiculous. The headliners, Jay-Z, Gorillaz, and Muse, were all artists people had been talking about playing at Coachella for years. Like every year, Coachella kicked my ass with its 90+ degree weather when I’m roaming from stage to stage for 10 hours. I will continue to talk about the festival more this week. I’ll be posting photos, hopefully some more exclusives, and clips from the likes of Club 75, Gorillaz, and more. You can’t see acts like this at any other festival, but Golden Bloggen is here to show you what you missed.

One of the biggest surprises 0f the festival was the late addition of Die Antwoord. The strange South African Youtube sensation stepped on the Coachella main stage late Saturday night for a 20-minute set. It was one of the best things at the festival. It’s inspiring that a small band can blow up on Youtube and then turn that into a legit music career. The rapping is a little off and a bit kitchy, but the beats hit hard, and that tiny girl can dance like a beast. They will also be playing at HARD’s M.I.A. show this July.

Today is a big day. I’m leaving for Coachella tomorrow, but before I leave I will be spinning at Golden Bloggen’s own Pre-Coachella party down at Bar Lubitsch in West Hollywood tonight. Come down if you’re looking to get down with some good tunes tonight. And for all of you who can’t make it, enjoy this track I got in the mail by the Aston Shuffle a couple weeks ago. It was accompanied by a few remixes. Something by Harvard Bass, Malente and newcomer D-Cup, but I thought the original was dancier than the remixes and worthy of it’s own post. I don’t know much about this duo from Australia, but I will definitely be playing close attention in the near future.

HUSKY RESCUE

The exceptional Slow Girl/Electronica band Husky Rescue released their new album Ship of Light earlier this year and its so damn silky and smooth. The first I heard from Husky Rescue was on Music Choice’s ‘Electronica’ channel. Music Choice is the series of music-only channels that come with Cable TV, and their Electronica channel use to play the best music. But recently they combined it with their wack ass Dance channel which plays a lot of bad Euro Trance and Dance Pop remixes. Its just not the same. Anyway, glad to see a band that I almost forgot about it is back. Hope that really sick Twelves remix is enough to break them in the states.

MIKE POSNER

Hip-Hop producer/Pop Artist Mike Posner has been getting a lot of radio play lately, but it’s mostly the Gigamesh remix of his track “Cooler Than Me.” Since Crookers blew up Kid Cudi’s track “Day N Night” it seems that mainstream radio has opened their minds to playing a lot of dance music. It also seems that the lines are being blurred between Dance and Pop music these days. I thought Dance was going to be the next Hip Hop but it’s seemed to jump Hip-Hop and has gone straight to attacking Pop music. I guess dance was always prevalent with artists like Madonna and Britney but I am seeing a full scale takeover. Hip-Hop, Pop, and Dance has combined into one giant monster. And when something like this happens it’s usually for the worst, but I’ve been feeling this track recently. And the other track “You Don’t Have to Leave” steals Miami Horror’s “Sometimes” beat, like so many artist’s Mixtapes are doing these days.

PROXY REMIXED

My favorite time of the year is here. The Coachella Valley Music Festival begins this Friday motherfuckers! If you don’t have your ticket by now, you missed out because Coachella has officially sold out. This is the first year they offered 3-day passes only, and the fans ate em up like hotcakes. The toughest thing about Coachella is deciding which bands you’re gonna have to miss, cuz trust me there will be schedule conflicts. The very first band I will be seeing at this year’s festival will most likely be Proxy. He is definitely high on the list of acts I’m most excited for. The Russian DJ known for his super-heaters “Dance In Dark” and “Raven” dropped off this unreleased John Roman remix of his track “8000.” And Proxy if you’re reading this… that’s gona be you in that picture in 4 days. You ready man?
