FYF FEST 2010

LA’s premiere indie rock festival, FYF Fest, returned to the LA State Historic Park this past Saturday. This may have been their most impressive line up yet, featuring headliners The Rapture and Panda Bear. But some of the smaller bands where the ones gaining all the attention. Actor Ryan Gosling brought his band, Dead Man’s Bones, to the stage with an unbelievably cute Kids Choir accompanying him.  Self-proclaimed “No-Fi” musician Washed Out may have been the only traditional electronica act on the bill, but he was definitely a stand out at the festival. But most of the buzz was surrounding an act that stepped on stage oddly enough at 3:30 in the afternoon. It had to do with the very eagerly awaited set from L.A. indie rockers, and GB favorites, Best Coast. There were more photographers ready for Best Coast than maybe any act all day. They opened with their increasingly popular single “Boyfriend” and had the crowd from jump. I’ve been pumping this band up to everyone I know, and they are easily the best new band of 2010. Their sound is definitely lo-fi, but they can still rock out when need be. You could tell they were a new band from watching their performance. They seemed very green, and still a little awkward, but I appreciate that. I like watching a new band taking on the pressure of stepping into the spotlight and still being able to rock a large crowd. And seeing how their live performance grows over time is one of the best parts of being a music fan. Overall Best Coast had a monster set and made some new believers out of those in the crowd who weren’t as familiar with their music as the die hard hipsters.
