IRON & WINE w/ LAURA MARLING @ THE WILTERN

Posted in CONCERTS on January 27, 2011 by Keyvon

Southern folk rocker Iron & Wine played two sold out shows at the Wiltern this week. We were lucky enough to cover Tuesday’s event. I’m not sure when the last time he was in town, but it must have been ages ago, because everyone and their momma came out. Iron & Wine, real name Samuel Beam, layered his show to keep the crowd in suspense. He entered the stage with only a few musicians accompanying him, then about 20 minutes into his set decided to add a full band. It was a great way to add some excitement to a concert where the music was so very chill. His new album, Kiss Each Other Clean (gross or sexy?), dropped the same day, Jan. 25th, but it seems Mr. Beam was in the mood to play some of his older tracks. The crowd didn’t seem to mind what he played as they melted with every Beam guitar strum.

Iron & Wine put on a solid show, but his opener, Miss Laura Marling, was a scene stealer. Her adorably innocent face and equally innocent music, was such a gem to witness live. The only two complaints I have about her set were 1) She performed a stripped down, solo set. Just her and her guitar. And 2) She didn’t play my favorite song “Ghosts”. That’s the best damn song in the world Laura! Make sure you play that track at every show. But her voice and music were great. Definitely watch out for this UK songbird. I see big things for her in the future.

Be sure you click on the pics from the night below, and check out my favorite songs from each artist, below as well. And thanks to Live Nation for throwing another great show.

WOBBLELAND 2011

Posted in CONCERTS on January 26, 2011 by Keyvon

By Austin Jones and Wes Bredin

Wobwobwobwobwobbleland….wow! What to say. Our heads are still ringing. Wobbleland was quite the experience….Imagine a typical rave, then add about 10db on top of that, drop the resonate frequency 100hz, remove any inhibitions you may have about stomping to dubstep, and voila…Wobbleland.  With a club capacity of 2500, it was as intimate as it was intense.

Two stages served to showcase the best dubstep producers/DJs in the business and when I say best, I mean THE best.  These included: Nero, Skrillex, Jakwob, Datsik, 12th Planet and more.   In a way, it was the best possible combination of all out insane wobbly magic, intimate performer/fan connection, and the convenience of being able to easily navigate from one stage to another given the relatively small venue.

The performers, each and everyone of them, commanded the crowd from the first drop to the last wobble.  The reason for this was two fold.  1) The performers were all top notch and playing the best tracks dubstep/drumstep has to offer and,  2)  The dubstep audience is THIRSTY for good dubstep shows.

Although only 1/2 of NERO showed up, the performance did not suffer at all, and  the energy of the crowd resonated through the rafters. NERO drew rabid fans eager to rage all over the place. If you’ve never seen Nero now is the time before they and dubstep as a genre take over the U.S. Check out the tracks from NERO’s new EP including NERO vs. Daft Punk below.

You’ll notice lots of pics of Skrillex in our album as well. We at Golden Bloggen are huge Skillex nuthuggers. He smashed the back room with his signature style we like to call “dubtron.” Skirllex provided the best, most insane moment of the night as well as the biggest WTF moment of the night. The best moment was when he played “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites,” jumped up on his table, and stage dove 10 feet down onto ecstatic fans. Check out the pics of him crowd surfing HERE.

The biggest WTF moment was when he played Montel Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It.” Really Skrilly? Was your “Candy Rain” download corrupted? He quickly realized that didn’t work and went back to hardcore dub/electro.

Big thanks to Magnum PR & The Musebox for making one of the best nights of over 2000 dubstepper’s lives!

TEACH ME HOW TO DUCKY

Posted in CONCERTS, MUSIC on January 19, 2011 by Keyvon

First off I want to remind everyone that I (Kool Ethan) will be back up at Bar Lubitsch this Thursday for another DJ Battle with Voomz. If you missed last months party you should murder yourself, cuz that shit was a lot of fun. As always at Lubitsch you can count on hot chicks and club jams. I will be spinning a lot of Old School Hip-Hop alongside the usual GB fare. Come down for a one of a kind musical night.

Secondly, I wanted to share yet another track from LA’s own DJ Wes B. His last mash-up has been gaining a lot of steam. This time he mashes up Wiz Khalifa’s “Say Yeah” with JFB’s “Duck Jam.” Let us know what you think about the track. And make your way down to Bar Lubitsch tomorrow night.

THAT DOCTOR IS LUDACRIS

Posted in MUSIC on January 10, 2011 by Keyvon

Here is a track that peaked my interest due to its interesting fusion of hip hop and dubstep.  I’m a big fan of both genres and this song ties the two together nicely.  I think there may be a future for certain types of dub-hop mashups in that they might bridge the gap between all the hip hop fans and the newer, more hard core dubsteppers….time will tell, but its worth a listen for sure.  Big up to L.A. DJ Wes B for coming up with this! If you dig this, check out his other mashups and mixes on his Soundcloud.
